Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries are facing increasing pressure to maintain innovation performance (IP) amidst digital transformation. While social media use (SMU) and intellectual capital (IC) are recognized as strategic resources, previous studies have reported inconsistent results regarding their direct effects on innovation outcomes. This study investigates the mediating role of absorptive capacity (AC) in linking SMU and IC to IP in Indonesian SMEs. Data were collected from 173 SME managers in Bali, Indonesia, using a structured survey. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to test the conceptual model and seven hypotheses. The results indicate that SMU and IC do not directly enhance IP but exert a significant indirect effect through AC. Specifically, AC fully mediates the relationship between SMU and IP and partially mediates the relationship between IC and IP. These findings highlight AC as a critical dynamic capability that enables SMEs to transform digital interactions and intangible resources into sustainable innovation outcomes. This study contributes to the resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities theory (DCT) by clarifying the role of AC as a connecting mechanism between digital resource adoption and innovation performance. In practice, these findings provide actionable insights for SME managers and policymakers on leveraging social media and intellectual capital to build absorptive capacity and strengthen innovation competitiveness in emerging markets.
